This World Heritage Area is a wonderful blend of high mountains, beautiful river valleys and remote wilderness. It’s a paradise for walkers and a magnet for serious mountaineers.
New Zealand's third largest national park (355,543 hectares) it is part of Te Wahipounamu - Southwest New Zealand World Heritage Area.
Accessible from Wanaka via the Makarora and Matukituki Valleys, it features a selection of short, easy walks off the Haast Pass Highway and more serious tramps such as the Gillespie Pass Circuit, the Wilkin Valley, Aspiring Hut, Liverpool Bivy and Cascade Saddle.
Drones are not permitted on any Council, Department of Conservation or private land without the necessary permission or consent, this includes private and non-commercial use. A Civil Aviation Part 102 license is also required.
